Let's Talk About Artificial Intelligence I.
I thought it might be a worthwhile endeavor to write about artificial intelligence (AI) as if we had never encountered the term or the concepts behind it before. To this end, I have drawn upon professional material from the NKI; this short summary—which I will publish in several installments over the coming days—incorporates quotations from that source.

Let us establish that, although AI systems are constantly evolving and already delivering outstanding performance in certain areas, they will likely never be fully human. The unique nature of human intelligence stems from various qualities and capabilities—such as emotions, creativity, and free will—that current AI technologies struggle to replicate, if they can do so at all.

So, I asked AI itself: "What is artificial intelligence?" I did this both last May and quite recently. The difference was striking. Six months ago, the answer looked like this: "Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems programmed to think and react like humans." Now, I received the following response: "Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field dedicated to developing intelligent behavior in computers and other technological systems. The goal of AI is to enable machines to recognize, interpret, learn from, and apply information in a manner similar to human intelligence. AI systems can perform tasks involving perception, language interpretation, decision-making, problem-solving, and adaptive learning."
In the time between these two answers, AI learned and evolved; machine learning is a field in which algorithms (procedures) learn from input data, thereby improving their performance and adaptability. This learning method enables AI systems to adapt to new data and environmental changes, improve their performance, and identify patterns.

And where does the development of AI stand today? One of the first publicly available solutions is ChatGPT, an online AI chatbot capable of responding like a real human; it has even passed the Turing test. This test determines whether a machine exhibits intelligent behavior while interacting with a real person via a text-based user interface (such as a monitor). If the person taking the test cannot distinguish whether they are communicating with a machine or a human, the machine has passed the test. The AI systems available today are the first capable of doing this...

I will continue shortly.
